Do Your Research Before Making Your CAO Choices

Ahead of the CAO deadline the Irish media have started a cycle of articles offering advice on courses on offer at various universities. In light of the current economic climate, it is expected that we will see a trend of students opting for more secure options such as Science, ICT and Engineering courses, all of which offer good employment opportunities.

The Sunday Business Post kicked off this weekend with articles on Science, Engineering and ICT courses. Unfortunately the engineering article doubles up with architecture, so overall it’s quite negative despite the opportunities for engineers out there. Some of the key points Michelle Devane makes in her article about science courses is that the job market for science graduate continues to look strong despite the negative economic outlook. With a number of leading companies in diverse fields such as pharmaceuticals and medical devices based in Ireland, there is likely to be strong demand for the years t come.

Similarly, Dick O’Brien reports in the same paper that the ICT sector is less likely to be affected by the economic downturn than other industries. In an interview with UCD careers director David Casey, Casey points out that students shouldn’t be put off by job losses at companies like Dell as there are numerous opportunities with software firms. In an interview for the same article, Hugh McCarthy of Brightwater Recruitment points out the online entertainment business has attracted a number of technology companies such as Popcap or Goa. As a result, there will be a similar level of demand for ICT graduates.

Make sure to check out articles in the Irish Independent, Irish Times and Irish Examiner during the week on the same theme.
