Science Roundup – 2 March

Science is a beneficiary of Obama’s budget. Moving on from the Bush era, Obama has increased spending for scientific agencies such as NASA, the EPA, and the Department of Energy. Gizmodo has more on the story.
St. Columba’s Science Department’s Frog Blog has started a seres of features on Irish scientists. First up and well worth a read is Francis Beaufort, who created the Beaufort Wind Speed Scale.
Wired reports on Science’s role in the credit crisis.
BrainStuff reports that the Oscars snubbed science again.
Wired also has an interesting feature on how beam powered propulsion could be the future of flight.
And of course, you couldn’t have a roundup of interesting science stories without something completely random. Tiny jackets have been created for hamsters to generate electricity. The technology might be adapted for humans or animals in the future in a bid to convert irregular biomechanical energy into electricity. Here’s a YouTube video of one of the hamsters in action.
