Summary: Applications are invited for two PhD positions at the Tangney Lab at Cancer Research UCC, Western Gateway Building, University College Cork.

Cancer Research UCC is a translational cancer research centre within the College of Medicine & Health, University College Cork. The Bacteria & Cancer theme, led by Mark Tangney, involves the study and/or and application of bacteria in cancer settings https://www.ucc.ie/en/cance­r-research­/people/ma­rk-tangney .

Background and objectives

The Tangney lab is currently seeking PhD candidates with an interest in wetlab and /or drylab (bioinformatics, sequence data analytics, protein design). This project is part of Precision Oncology Ireland https://www.precisiononcology.ie and will involve studying bacteria in the context of cancer to include microbiome and/or bacteria as cancer therapeutics.

Start date: September 2026

Eligibility criteria

Essential: BSc in a biological science subject or computer science.

Desirable: MSc in relevant topic; Wet lab experience (bacterial or cell culture) or bioinformatics
